Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about boda boda financing with Baikal.

Eligibility

Who can apply?
Any Ugandan resident with an active boda stage or verifiable rider income, a valid National ID and NIN, a working mobile number, and an eligible guarantor may apply.
Must I already be a boda rider?
No. First-time riders can apply, but you must be able to show a realistic plan for earning income from the motorcycle and pass Baikal's affordability assessment.
Can a first-time rider apply?
Yes, subject to verification of income potential, guarantor eligibility and the standard assessment process.
What identification is accepted?
A valid National ID with a National Identification Number (NIN) is required for both the applicant and the guarantor.
How many guarantors are required?
At least one eligible guarantor with valid identification is required. Additional guarantors may be requested depending on your assessment.

Deposit and payments

What is the minimum deposit?
The required deposit depends on the motorcycle and your assessment. A Baikal financing officer will confirm your indicative deposit before you sign an agreement.
How is the weekly payment calculated?
Weekly payments are calculated on a reducing balance basis, using the financed amount (motorcycle price minus deposit), Baikal's interest rate, and your agreed repayment period.
How do I make payments?
Payments can be made through Airtel Money, MTN Mobile Money, or the USSD payment process, using the payment reference linked to your loan account.
Can I pay early?
Yes. Early repayment is allowed. Speak to your financing officer or branch to confirm any applicable terms before settling early.
What happens if I miss a payment?
A late payment penalty applies per day on the overdue amount. If two or more weekly instalments are missed, Baikal may recall the loan after a notice period. Contact your branch as soon as possible if you expect difficulty paying.

Motorcycles

Which models are available?
Availability varies by branch and changes regularly. A financing officer will confirm current petrol and electric options for you.
Are electric motorcycles available?
Yes, subject to current availability at your preferred branch.
Are used motorcycles available?
Availability of used motorcycles varies. Ask your financing officer about current options.
Is insurance included?
You are required to maintain comprehensive insurance on the motorcycle with an insurer approved by Baikal, naming Baikal as the loss payee, for as long as the loan is outstanding.
Is GPS tracking required?
Yes. Financed motorcycles are fitted with a tracking device for asset protection and loan monitoring. Tampering with the device is treated as a default under the agreement.

Application and approval

How do I apply?
Submit the short online application, or visit a branch directly. A financing officer will contact you to continue the verification process.
How long does assessment take?
Decisions are normally provided within one business day of completing verification.
Why might an application be declined?
Applications may be declined based on affordability assessment, Credit Reference Bureau checks, guarantor eligibility, or incomplete verification.
Does applying guarantee approval?
No. Submitting an application does not guarantee approval. Financing is subject to assessment.

Accidents and theft

What should I do after an accident?
Report the accident to the police and to Baikal immediately, and inform your insurer to begin a claim.
What happens if the motorcycle is stolen?
Report the theft to the police and to Baikal immediately. Loss or theft does not exempt you from your repayment obligations; your insurance claim should be assigned to Baikal.
Who should I contact in an emergency?
Contact your branch by phone or WhatsApp, or the Baikal customer-care line, as soon as possible.

Ownership

When does the motorcycle become mine?
Ownership transfers once all repayment and ownership conditions in your signed agreement are completed.
How is the logbook transferred?
Once the loan is fully repaid, Baikal arranges transfer of the logbook to you. Associated transfer costs and fees are borne by the borrower.
Are there final transfer charges?
Yes, a logbook transfer fee applies on completion of the loan, payable with your final instalment.

Complaints and privacy

How do I make a complaint?
Contact your branch, call Baikal's customer-care line, or use the complaints route on our Contact page. All complaints are logged and followed up.
How does Baikal use my personal information?
